Bgrep is the combination of the software Grep and the book Un ABC de la barbarie (Jacques-Henri Michot). It’s an adaptation of the this book in the form of a software. It’s an electronic implementation of this book as a text mining software.

The grep program is perhaps one of the best known among developers: it is used to search for text patterns (patterns) in files, displaying each line of text that contains the pattern defined by the user. This makes it a practical tool for browsing a collection of files (i.e., texts) based on a question (the pattern) and examining it from a specific perspective: Is the word “Antarctica” found in this folder containing several thousand files? Does a particular document contain the word “être” followed by one of the prepositions “parmi,” “entre,” or “vers”? etc. On most Linux operating systems, you’ll also find the related programs fgrep, egrep, and rgrep: they perform the same operation but use different ways of describing text patterns. (There are also pgrep, ugrep…)

bgrep is another tool in this analytical arsenal. But unlike grep, fgrep, etc., bgrep does not allow you to specify the patterns to search for yourself: it searches for the “noises” compiled by Jacques Henri Michot (and his avatar Barnabé B) in **An ABC of Barbarism*,... these “media stereotypes---frozen phrases, poisons for the mind” such as “social burdens,” “law enforcement”, “human resources”..

bgrep can thus be described as an extension (or an inversion?), or even as a computer implementation of this book of poetry and criticism... in the Brechtian tradition (which it allows us, in a sense, to apply), as well as, of course, a tribute.
